Feedback loop while drawing: is it looking the way I pictured it?  How am I picturing it?

Block in value pattern that expresses the scene clearly.  Then convert to color.

It's about the larger shapes and design AND the idea behind it.

Image result for graphic la robh ruppel

When sketching from life, you have to alter the values to produce the design that makes the scene easiest to read and states the intent/focus.

Color and Light - Chapter 10

Atmospheric Effects

Sky Blue

- Color of the sky changes based on where you're looking depending on the time of day.
- Mixtures must shift from top to bottom as well as from side to side.

Image result for james gurney blue sky

Atmospheric Perspective

The way the appearance of objects changes as they are viewed at a distance through layers of illuminated air.
- The bold colors of the foreground gradually transform until they match the sky.
- Dust particles and distance have an impact on the atmospheric conditions.

Image result for james gurney high country

Reverse Atmospheric Perspective

General rule: Warm colors advance and cool colors recede.
Broken rule: The entire scene gets warmer as it goes back.

This happens when vapor or dust particles in the air gather around the light source (usually the sun).

Image result for james gurney kaaterskill falls

Golden Hour Lighting

Strong color is fleeting in nature.
- Dawn or dusk are the times when colors become bold and dramatic.

The sun is so low in the sky, the light travels almost parallel to the surface of the earth.
Planes and objects are lit directly at this time - enhancing the colors we see.

Image result for james gurney west clare graveyard

Sunsets

Sunsets provide many colors because the sun is interacting with so many different layers of air, dust, and clouds.

When air is full of moisture and dust, the sunset will be accompanied by more conspicuous red and yellow clouds.  Boldest colors will be found nearest where the sun crosses the horizon.

Fog, Mist, Smoke, Dust

Contrast drops off rapidly as forms recede in space.
Light seems to come from all directions.

Image result for james gurney harbor fog

Rainbows

Tips:
- The colors of the rainbow should always be lighter than the background, because the colored light of the rainbow is added to the light in the scene behind it.

Image result for james gurney waterfall city

Skyholes and Foliage

Tips:
- Smaller skyholes should be painted a little darker than the overall sky behind the tree.
- Soften the edges of smaller skyholes.
- Include transparency in foliage.

Image result for james gurney upstream from clonmel

Sunbeams and Shadowbeams

Occur when:
- High screen of clouds, foliage, or architecture is punctured by a few openings.
- The air is filled with dust, vapor, smoke, or smog.
- The view is toward the sun.

Dappled Light

Sunlight shining through the spaces between the leaves of a tree.
Spots will move and/or disappear when the wind blows and cloud coverage sets in.

Image result for james gurney bilgewater

Cloud Shadows

Clouds interrupt the view towards the sun.
Patches of sunlight drift across the landscape surrounded by cloud shadows.
USE THIS TOOL TO CONTROL THE VIEWS ATTENTION!

Image result for james gurney bilgewater

Illuminated Foreground

Illuminate the immediate foreground in light and put the middle distance into shadow.

Image result for james gurney light at the crossroads

Snow and Ice

Snow is denser than clouds or foam, so it's whiter.
Snow picks up everything around it, especially in shadow.
Cast shadows on snow take on the color of the sky.  Shadows on a partly cloudy day are grayer.

Image result for james gurney rhinebeck par

Water: Reflection and Transparency

Reflection: light rays bounce off the surface
Refraction: light rays travel down into the water

Image result for james gurney reflection

Mountain Streams

Water in mountain streams behaves differently in mountain streams.
Color of the stream bottom changes.
Foam forms sometimes.

Image result for james gurney esopus creek

Color Underwater

Water selectively filters out colors of light passing through it.
At different levels, different light is filtered out.  This results in different lighting.

100 Tuesday Tips

Straight against Curves

- Straights lead the eye quickly while curves slow it down.
- Breaking down more complex shapes using straights and curves.
- Weight and function.

Image result for griz and norm straights and curves

Hands

- Group fingers to simplify the overall gesture.
- Create a silhouette that will read quickly and clearly.
- Create a clear line of action.

Image result for griz and norm straights and curves

Feet

- Similar to hands.
- Feet can say relaxed and confident or nervous, shy, awkward, etc...
- Toes are like a staircase.

Image result for griz and norm feet

Rules of Cropping

- Crop at 2/3 or 3/4 marks (creates comfortable breathing room)
- Do Not crop at joints or edges!

Image result for griz and norm cropping

Generic Female Body Proportion

- Basic 8 head proportion.
- Stylized: everything gets pushed a little more (longer neck, smaller waist, more pinch at joints...)

Image result for griz and norm female proportion

Hand Design: Masculine vs Feminine

- Mass: Wide vs Lean
- Shape: Square vs Pointy
- Neutral Pose: In vs Out

Image result for griz and norm hand design

Head Basics and Foundation

- Skull and planes of the head!

Image result for griz and norm head basics

No Straight Lines

- Straight lines kill the fluidity of a pose!
- Curved lines give a ton of information.
- Switch curvature to give rhythm.

Image result for griz and norm no straights

Floating Hands

- Drawing hands first can help with gesture and structure.
- Foreshortened poses are often focused on hands.
- Hands don't support body weight in standing poses.  They can be placed to provide clarity and appeal.

Image result for griz and norm floating hands

Eyes

- Match the eyebrows to the shapes/expressions of the eyes.

Image result for griz and norm eyes

Ears

- Think of ears as volumes.  They can be very useful in "over the shoulder" shots.
- Can help indicate position of the head/perspective.

Image result for griz and norm ear

Nose

- Remember, the bony part doesn't move.  The fleshy part does.
- Simplify!

Image result for griz and norm nose

Hair

- Keep hairline and part in mind.
- Always start with big shapes.  Break down to smaller shapes later.  Keep it flowing!

Image result for griz and norm nose

Skull and Bones

- Remember: Same bones under different body types (muscle/fat).

Image result for griz and norm skull and bones

Visual Anchors

- Use clothing to express volumes and direction!

Image result for griz and norm visual anchors

Clothing

- Use folds, edges, etc. to suggest volume and perspective.
- Pay attention to tension and gravity.
- Begin with big shapes (like hair) and then add smaller details.

Image result for griz and norm clothing

Folds

- Combination of contour and "kind of straight" lines for the silhouette.
- Pay attention to tension!

Image result for griz and norm clothing

Leg Support

- Easy to understand weight when holding a heavy object.
- Consider own body weight as well.  Especially when standing.

Image result for griz and norm leg support

Face Profile

- Enables the artist to play with many different sizes and shapes.
- Watch out for the ear and back of the head!

Image result for griz and norm face profile

Asymmetry in Facial Expressions

- Asymmetry expresses anything looking for a solution.
- Tilt of head can add even more.

Image result for griz and norm face profile

Simple Shadows

- Simplify areas of shadow.
- Less is more.

Image result for griz and norm simple shades

Body Shapes

- Repeat a similar shape within a main body shape to unify a basic character design.

Image result for griz and norm body shapes

Teeth

- Understand the basics first!
- Remember the lower jaw can move around quite a bit.

Image result for griz and norm teeth

Watch Your Back

- Different body types, same basic foundation!
- Some back muscles wrap around to the front. (Teres major, lats)

Color and Light

Chapter 11 - Light's Changing Show

Serial Painting

The creation of multiple plein-air studies of the same subject under different lighting conditions, or the making of a set of closely related studies one after another.

Tips:
1.  Choose a motif with a strong sense of atmospheric perspective.
2.  Paint/draw on a single board taped or divided into different sections.
3.  Keep the drawing consistent each time so the only variable is the light and color or shadow shapes and value.
4.  When beginning each study, don't look at the others.
5.  Paint/draw the subject at different times of day and, if possible, different seasons.

At the End of the Day

Themes of James Gurney's Color and Light:

1.  Color and light are not separate topics, but rather closely related.
2.  Viewers will see the subject, but feel the color and light.
3.  Choose a lighting plan and stick to it.
4.  Know your wheel.
5.  Know your gamut.
6.  Vision is an active process.
7.  There is not a single brand of realism.
8.  Compare, compare, compare.
9.  The outer eye fuels the inner eye.
10.  We are fortunate to be living today.

Graphic LA - pgs 78 - 95

 - Good value design is the clear, simple arrangement of a few tones.  (a simple progression of tone)
 - Don't get hung up on one way to make art.  Try out what looks right to you.
 - Make the next brush stroke exactly what you want it to be.

 - Reduce, refine, interpret.
(Draw something a few times - Reduce to simple, clear geometric shapes and simple, clear form.)

100 Tuesday Tips

Push it

Push character posing to make a clear statement.
Define line of action and a clear silhouette.

Image result for griz and norm push it

The 3 Steps

Character Drawing/Posing Process:
1.  Quick, bold, gesture
2.  Shapes and angles
3.  Volumes

Image result for griz and norm push it

Simple Volumes

Suggest volume and perspective through receding curved lines.

Line of Action

 - Easier to see on characters without as many limbs and in mid-air.
 - Spine is always part of the line of action.
 - Props and can/should become a continuation to the line of action.

Image result for griz and norm line of action

Power/Dominance

 - Dominant characters should be higher on screen/composition.
 - Use clear lines of action to define relationship of power.
 - Open vs closed = confident vs unsure.

Gesture Drawing

 - Don't overthink it.
 - Keep it simple.
 - A few simple lines are often more direct than making it very detailed.
 - Putting the character in a simple situation can give feeling.

Image result for griz and norm gesture drawing

More Tips on Gesture Drawing

 - Interlock curves to create rhythm.
 - Keep limbs clearly defined.
 - Emphasize the leg which carries the most weight.

Image result for griz and norm gesture drawing

Shorthands

Strip your character down to big shapes.  Only keep what can be used.  Use and re-use over while creating a story or composition.
 - Animals can usually be stripped down to the spine.
 - Certain head positions can be used and re-used.  They should become second-nature.
 - Shapes, stances, and attitudes should be represented in just a few lines.

Image result for griz and norm shorthands

More Acting, Less Anatomy

 - Simple characters should be used to explore the acting possibilities.
 - Suggest clothing and shadows if they add to your story.
 - Sketching should be fast and loose.
